GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 12th. June, 1918.
I have the honour to inform you that on the
2nd. of January an application for 4 months' vacation leave
with a view to retirement from the Service in July was receiv-
-ed from Mr. C. H. Gale of the Public Works Department.
2.
On the 10th of January I caused Mr. Gale
to be informed that as the Department was shorthanded I could
not permit him to retire.
3.
On the lst. of May he addressed a letter,
copy of which I attach, to the Head of his Department, in reply to which I caused him to be informed that I had read his letter with surprise and was unable to entertain his
application.
4.
I have now received the enclosed memorial from Mr. Gale for transmission to you. You will notice that he requests that he may be notified of your decision by telegraph the cost of which he is prepared to defray.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
